Travertine is a sedimentary rock of chemical origin, composed mainly of calcium carbonate minerals. As mineral-rich waters emerging from underground lose carbon dioxide while reaching the surface, calcium carbonate precipitates and hardens over time to form travertine stone. This natural process gives travertine a porous structure. The size of the pores determines the stone's density, durability and visual character.
One of its most distinctive features is its natural patterns and color transitions. Iron oxides, manganese, clay minerals and other impurities in the structure of the stone affect the color and vein structure of travertine. This creates a wide color range such as beige, gray, yellow, pink, red and white.
Travertineis a special natural stone that has an important place in both historical and modern architecture and stands out with its naturalness and aesthetics. Preferred in buildings for hundreds of years, this stone maintains its popularity today with its elegant look, durability and different color options. Known for its use both indoors and on exterior facades, travertine adds both a classic and a contemporary feel to projects.
In this article, we will examine in detail what travertine is, its formation process, geological properties, colors, types, areas of use, surface finishes and its pros and cons.
One of the frequently asked questions is “Is travertine a type of marble?” From a geological point of view, travertine and marble are different rock types.
In commercial classification, however, many stones that can be polished are called marble. For this reason, the expression “travertine marble” may be used colloquially, but technically it is not marble.
Travertine is formed when bicarbonate-rich waters come into contact with the atmosphere and the precipitation process begins with the release of carbon dioxide. The chemical equation is as follows:
Ca(HCO₃)₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O + CO₂
In this process, calcium carbonate accumulates in layers. During precipitation, the color of the stone is shaped according to the type of mineral it contains. For example, iron oxides can steer the color of the stone toward yellow or red, while manganese can steer it toward gray or brown tones.
Technical properties of travertine:

Beige travertine is one of the best-known and most preferred types. Thanks to its soft tones, it suits every design style.
Frequently preferred in modern spaces, gray travertine offers a sophisticated look.
Ideal for creating a warm and energetic atmosphere.
Rarely found pink travertine is preferred in luxurious and elegant projects.
Stands out with its vivid and striking look. The veins in it are usually cream or white. Used in special projects and for accent purposes.
Creates a warm and natural atmosphere with its dark beige and brown tones.
Provides a clean, spacious and bright look.

Thanks to its porous structure, it provides natural slip resistance even on wet floors.
Its appearance changes according to the surface finish applied:
Travertine is one of the rare materials in the world of natural stone that combines aesthetics and functionality. Thanks to its natural color tones, different surface finishes and versatile uses, it can be confidently preferred in both modern and classic architectural projects.
With the right cut, appropriate surface finish and regular maintenance, it retains its first-day elegance for years. As Mermer Outlet, we offer the elegance and durability of travertine in your projects to the highest standards.
