Mermer Outlet's answers to the questions our customers ask most often about wholesale pricing, natural stone, design, stone care and shipping.
Mermer Outlet offers many materials: marble (the most popular and elegant option), porcelain (the second most requested material), limestone (an affordable alternative to marble), ceramic (popular in bathrooms and kitchens), travertine (a warm and affordable natural look), pebble mosaics, terracotta, granite, terrazzo, slate, cement and basalt (ideal for wet areas). Each has its own distinctive look, properties and best areas of use.
Most stones are quarried in the mountains; some are sourced from riverbeds and seas. Premium-quality natural stones come from Türkiye, Italy and Spain, the world's most important and well-known natural stone suppliers.
Each type of stone contains different minerals that give it different properties; these minerals are also what create the shiny flecks you see.
Every natural stone is unique and has its own distinctive properties. The best choice depends on the area of use: marble is suitable for high-traffic floors, while limestone, although less durable, works well in wall applications. Consider the area of use, water resistance and whether it is for indoor or outdoor use.
Natural stones come from nature as raw material. It is the production process that brings out their beauty; state-of-the-art facilities produce high-quality products regardless of the country of origin.
Surface finishing is similar to sanding: finer grit creates a shiny, polished look, while less sanding gives a more natural look. Polished surfaces suit modern interiors but require careful maintenance. Tumbled/aged surfaces have a natural patina and are more resistant to wear. Travertine's natural holes can be left unfilled or filled and grouted.
Edge finishes are a design choice:
Exotic stones come from very remote regions of the world and require extra care during production and transport. Weather conditions, seasonal restrictions and shipping limitations restrict the availability of these stones.
Natural stone retains its beauty indefinitely and creates a unique atmosphere. Artificial alternatives look uniform and synthetic, wear easily and quickly lose their appeal. Natural stone used in monuments retains its beauty even after thousands of years.
Common tiles range from 10×10 cm to 60×60 cm; size is a design choice. Indoor tiles are usually 30×30 cm or 45×45 cm; the standard thickness is about 1 cm for 30×30 and about 1.2 cm for 45×45. Thicker tiles require a concrete floor and mortar-set installation.
Decorative stone tiles accentuate surface coverings. Borders create frames and edgings clarify the separation between spaces. Mosaics, borders and edgings offer unlimited design possibilities.
Natural stone holds heat and cold and feels cooler than room temperature. Your installer can guide you on underfloor heating options.
Not always. Price depends on quarry capacity and production volume; higher production lowers costs. Well-known stones such as Carrara marble or travertine are more affordable thanks to their enormous reserves.
This is entirely a matter of taste. Light colors usually work better in spaces with limited natural light.
Travertine offers a warm, classic look and easy maintenance at an affordable price. If you do not like the holes, your installer can grout them.
Marble is a type of limestone, and its density varies depending on where it is quarried. Dense marbles form a natural seal that resists stains, while porous types stain easily. Liquids left for a long time can etch the surface in any case; therefore sealing marble tiles is recommended.
Granite is extremely dense and strong and naturally resists stains. Liquids wiped up within minutes do not penetrate, and water-based stains evaporate. Non-water-based stains such as cooking oil can be absorbed over time; a poultice/paste application draws the oils back out.
Like marble, travertine is a type of limestone, but because it is quite porous and less dense, it stains easily. Acidic liquids such as fruit juice or carbonated drinks can leave stains within minutes and etch the surface. Sealing is recommended and use as a kitchen countertop is not advised.
Limestone forms grain by grain over thousands of years. Dense limestone resists stains, but most types are porous and absorb liquids easily. Acidic solvents such as lemon juice leave stains within minutes and etch the surface. Sealing is strongly recommended and use in the kitchen is not advised.
Onyx is a crystallized stone containing bands of silica-quartz minerals; it is extremely delicate and surface scratches can cause flaking. It is naturally porous and absorbs liquids easily. Sealing is strongly recommended; onyx is not suitable for high-traffic areas and spills should be wiped up immediately.
Slate is a dense metamorphic rock and is not very porous, so it does not stain easily. However, its softness makes it vulnerable, especially to oil-based stains, and water can penetrate it. Using a matte sealer and wiping up spills immediately is recommended.
Marble is the least porous of the limestone types, but it has a soft surface and scratches and chips easily, especially from metal knives and pots. Acidic substances such as lemon juice, soda and coffee easily etch the surface. Tumbled/aged marble is more durable; polished marble countertops are prone to scratching.
Granite is known for its strength; only granite or diamond can scratch it. It is excellent for high-traffic areas and kitchen countertops; a slipping knife does no damage (though the knife may break).
Travertine is a highly porous, very soft limestone made largely of calcite (about 3 on the Mohs scale), so a knife edge (about 5.5) easily cuts the surface. Exposure to acidic substances causes etching. It is not recommended as a kitchen countertop.
Limestone is a soft, porous stone whose surface scratches easily. Because of its calcite structure (about 3 Mohs), a slipping knife leaves scratches, and it is vulnerable to acidic liquids. It is not recommended as a kitchen countertop, but it is suitable as a kitchen floor.
Onyx contains chalcedony bands (6–7 Mohs) within much softer surrounding stone, so it scratches and flakes easily. It is not suitable for high-use kitchen countertop applications.
Slate is dense but has a soft, uneven surface, so it scratches easily from everyday objects (dog claws, metal toys). Its density prevents acid sensitivity and wear. It is not suitable for countertops but is durable as a kitchen floor.
In general, light-colored stones work better in spaces with limited exposure to natural light.
Stone tiles are suitable for bathrooms, showers and backsplashes exposed to wet and slippery conditions. These surfaces clean easily and repel water.
Yes. Using materials from the same regions of the world lets you vary colors while retaining similar properties.
Decorative natural stones accentuate tiles, floors and walls.
Stone baseboards enrich floors; they add a distinctive stone look and a deeper, three-dimensional feel to the room.
Yes. Almost every five-star hotel uses polished marble in its bathrooms and showers.
Yes. Tiles and baseboards create natural stone countertops with minimal grout gaps for about a quarter of the price of a single-piece countertop.
All natural stones should be sealed with a quality sealer. Once sealed, all stones become stain-resistant. Follow the sealer's instructions for correct application.
Different sealers affect the stone's color differently. Sealing usually creates a slightly wetter, cleaner look. Sealers without color enhancers keep the stone close to its original appearance.
Depending on use, seal your stone tiles about once a year. Refer to the sealer instructions. Industry natural stone resources also offer helpful stone care information.
