A narrow band, a big impact
The backsplash is generally a height between 55 and 70 cm. The size and pattern you choose for this narrow band is what most defines the character of the kitchen after the cabinets. Since part of the surface will be covered by cabinets and the range hood, the pattern should be planned according to the exposed section of the countertop.
Size and layout
- Long-format tiles laid horizontally stretch the backsplash from end to end; the most common and safest choice.
- Herringbone laying creates movement in a narrow band. Since cutting loss increases, take the waste allowance from the upper limit.
- Mosaic sheets fit divided surfaces such as around sockets, corners and under cabinets without cutting.
Ease of cleaning
This surface gets oil splashes and steam condensation. Glazed ceramic and porcelain are the lowest-maintenance options; they are non-porous and unaffected by acidic cleaners. If you prefer natural stone, apply a sealer and do not leave acidic liquids such as lemon and vinegar on the surface. Grease stains are the dirt that leaves the most marks on unprotected stone.
Grout color
Light-colored grout gets dirty faster in the kitchen. A mid gray or beige close to the tile tone both hides stains and makes the surface look unified. With white subway tile, contrasting dark grout is a deliberate design choice; you need to accept from the start that dirt will be more visible.
Sales unit and calculation
Sockets and lighting line
On the backsplash, outlets and under-cabinet lighting interrupt the pattern. Plan the tile layout knowing where these elements will be; outlet covers landing exactly in the middle of a tile or on a grout line look much neater than leaving a thin strip at the edge. Finalize the position of the outlets before installation.
Tiles are priced per square meter and sold in boxes; mosaic sheets, borders and accessories are priced per piece. Enter the square meters you need in the calculator on the product page; it finds how many boxes you need and adds the waste allowance. The allowance we recommend is between 10 and 15 percent.
