Why the choice is freer on the wall
Wall tiles are not exposed to foot traffic, do not need to provide grip when wet and do not wear. That is why glossy and polished surfaces that are risky on floors can be used freely on walls. When deciding, light, texture and layout come to the fore instead of technical constraints.
How the layout changes the space
- Horizontal layout: With the long edge horizontal, the wall looks wider. Opens up space in narrow bathrooms and corridors.
- Vertical layout: Makes the ceiling look higher. Preferred in rooms with low ceilings and in shower niches.
- Herringbone and diagonal laying: Creates directional movement and gives a flat wall a focal point. Since cutting loss increases, take the waste allowance from the upper limit.
Before installation
The flatness of the wall directly determines the look of the tile. On an uneven surface, level differences form between tiles and the light shows these differences as shadows. Before installation, clean the wall and level it if necessary; choosing a suitable adhesive is also important for natural stone and large-format tiles.
Grout and color
A grout close to the tile tone makes the surface look unified and calm; contrasting grout outlines the form of each tile and is deliberately preferred for defined forms such as subway and hexagon. Use mold-resistant grout on wet area walls, and apply flexible silicone instead of grout in shower corners.
Box calculation and waste allowance
Sockets, niches and cutting plan
Points on the wall that require cuts, such as sockets, switches and niches, determine the look. Before installation, divide the wall dimension by the tile size to plan where the cuts will fall; leave the partial piece not at eye level but at a less visible end such as behind a cabinet or in a corner. Finishing the inner edges of niches with a profile gives a finished look.
Tiles are priced per square meter and sold in boxes; mosaic sheets, borders and accessories are priced per piece. Enter the square meters you need in the calculator on the product page; it finds how many boxes you need and adds the waste allowance. The allowance we recommend is between 10 and 15 percent.
